Lukasz Lukasik: Prisoner took his own life in cell - inquest finds
- Published
An inmate found hanged in his cell at Hull Prison took his own life, an inquest has found.
Lukasz Lukasik, 36, was on remand after pleading guilty to murdering his father and the attempted murder of his mother and assaulting his sister.
A warder found Lukasik's body during morning roll call on 27 May 2021.
Pathologist Dr Christopher Johnson told Hull Coroner's Court the prisoner had been dead for 30 minutes or longer when he was discovered.
The jury heard a medical assessment carried out on Lukasik when he arrived at the jail found he was not considered at risk of self-harm or suicide and there were "no concerns for his welfare".
He told the nurse who interviewed him that he "knew he was facing a long prison sentence".
Summing up the evidence, Assistant Coroner James Hargan said that Lukasik's demeanour and mood was observed by staff during his imprisonment and there was "no evidence that pointed to him being a risk to himself".
On the day of his death, a guard failed to see Lukasik when she looked through a hatch in the door during the morning roll call and assumed he had been transferred elsewhere.
It was only when the number of prisoners did not tally on the prison system that officers opened his cell, about 14 minutes later.
Recording that Lukasik had taken his own life, the jury foreman said the prison could not have foreseen that he intended to take his own life, adding that the delay in opening the cell door "would not have affected the outcome".
Polish-born Lukasik had lived in the UK for 17 years.
He was awaiting sentencing after admitting killing his father Jerzy Lukasik, attempting to murder his mother Maria Lukasik and assaulting his sister Monica Lukasik at a property in Finkle Street in Selby, North Yorkshire on 29 December 2020.
