Three men die after 4x4 enters River Esk in North York Moors

Three men have died after a 4x4 vehicle went into a river in North Yorkshire, police said.

Emergency services, including air support, were called to the River Esk near Glaisdale in the North York Moors at 11:50 GMT on Thursday.

Police said a man who jumped into the water to try and help the trapped men was rescued and received medical treatment.

The vehicle was pulled from the water by firefighters at about 15:00 GMT.

North Yorkshire Police said the men's next of kin had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers.

The force warned roads around the River Esk were badly affected by flooding.

'Hazardous' roads

Police said in a statement: "Localised conditions across our area are making driving hazardous.

"Roads are particularly badly affected around the River Esk, to the north of the county, as we have seen with the tragic incident near Glaisdale.

"There was another incident at nearby Houlsyke at 12:49 GMT when a car got stuck in flood water and another at Kirby Wiske in Hambleton at 14:35.

"Thankfully, the occupants of both vehicles were brought to safety."
