Hardy swimmers in Scarborough take New Year's Day plunge for charity

Prizes are given for the best group and individual fancy dress costumes

More than 150 people have plunged into the chilly North Sea for Scarborough's annual fundraising New Year's Day dip.

Seaside dippers from across England donned fancy dress to join the event which has been a town tradition for more than 20 years.

Organised by Scarborough Lions Club, people take part to raise money for various charities.

Club president Roy Chambers said the sea temperature was 8C (46F) and that turnout had been "terrific".

Every year, the event on the South Beach bay raises thousands of pounds for charities supported by the Lions Club.

It has developed into the main attraction of the day for the Scarborough area with people travelling from all over to brave the icy waters.
