Two people have been seriously injured in a crash that led to the closure of a busy road in North Yorkshire.

Police said a silver Jaguar and a blue Ford Focus collided head-on on the A64 west of Malton, at the bottom of Golden Hill, near Huttons Ambo.

It happened just before midnight on Friday, and the road remained closed at midday on Saturday.

Both drivers suffered serious injuries, police said. One of them was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Witness appeal

Police said the man, who is in his 30s, is assisting with the investigation.

Drivers are being urged to use alternative routes if they need to travel through the area, but diversions are in place.

The closure affects the road between Huntington and Old Malton.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact them.
