The routes would allow cyclists to explore the Yorkshire coast at their own pace, Route YC's CEO, Kerry Carruthers, said

New Yorkshire coast cycling routes will attract international visitors and boost the local economy, the people behind the new network have said.

The 12 routes, which range from nine to 260 miles (14 to 418km) long, will let cyclists explore on gravel, touring and road bikes, according to Route YC.

The development of the network was led by adventure cyclists Markus Stitz, Mark Beaumont and Jenny Graham.

Ms Graham said the new routes had all been tailored to different abilities.

They included a choice of three long-distance routes and nine itineraries which could be completed in a single day, she said.

A spokesperson for Route YC, which is funded by the Yorkshire Coast Business Improvement District, said starting points for the single-day routes would be Grosmont, Filey, Whitby, Scarborough, Bridlington and Hornsea.

The main circular route would start and finish in Scarborough and could be cycled on using gravel bikes, they added.

The Route YC spokesperson said the network also included a weekender route starting in Whitby and a cycle touring route running from the ferry terminal in Hull to Staithes in North Yorkshire.

Ms Graham said people on their first bike-packing trip would be able to tailor it "so it was really manageable".

She said experienced cyclists had the option "of making the days a bit more challenging and a bit harder".

Markus Stitz, who was has cycled the world on a single-speed bike, said: "We're really proud to be unveiling the new Route YC cycle network.

"People from around the UK and beyond can now enjoy a new range of on and off-road cycle routes that will allow them to get off the beaten track and discover what the region has to offer."

Kerry Carruthers, chief executive officer of Route YC, said: "We're offering people a variety of new ways to create their own two-wheel adventure.

"As well as visitors from around the UK, we also hope to attract international cycling enthusiasts."
