Revamps of a landmark medieval tower and a brutalist housing estate are among seven Yorkshire projects on the shortlist for top architectural awards.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) said the schemes boasted "innovative designs" which "reinvented existing buildings".

Other shortlisted projects include Catterick Racecourse, Harrogate's Crimple Hall and Leeds School of Arts.

The winners of the Riba Yorkshire Awards will be announced in the spring.

All those on the shortlist are due to be visited by a regional jury, with the winners then considered for several other Riba Special Awards before being considered for the National Award.

'Radical restoration'

Riba Yorkshire jury chair Lucy Plumridge, the associate director of HLM Architects, said: "We commend these practices for their innovative designs, which reflect the social and economic impact of reinventing existing buildings.

"From the radical restoration of Clifford's Tower, which unlocks rooms that have been inaccessible for over 300 years, to a sustainable farmers market building which sensitively connects to the surrounding Crimple Valley and habitats, as well as a concert hall upgrade which enriches a town hall's cultural offering, there is a fantastic breadth of architecture across the region."
