The sinkhole is thought to have appeared in Barwick Street, Scarborough, on Tuesday
A street in Scarborough has been closed after a sinkhole appeared in the road.
The hole in Barwick Street was first reported on Tuesday afternoon and police asked people to avoid the area.
North Yorkshire Council said on Wednesday it had been notified of a suspected road collapse and had coned off the area.
Highways area manager Richard Marr confirmed Barwick Street was closed from its junctions with Victoria Road and Barwick Terrace.
An investigation into the sinkhole would be carried out, he said.
The council added that it would "continue to update the public".
