Derry City Council chief Valerie Watts resigns

Valerie Watts is leaving to take up a new post in Aberdeen

The Chief Executive of Derry City Council, Valerie Watts, has resigned.

She is stepping down to take up the position of Chief Executive of Aberdeen City Council.

Ms Watts, who was appointed to the post in July 2008, was the council's first female chief executive.

During her time in office she vowed to cut the council's overtime, sickness and mileage costs, and helped spearhead the city's successful bid to be UK City of Culture 2013.

Ms Watts said she had enjoyed her time at Derry City Council "immensely".

"I believe the city has many opportunities ahead and that strong partnerships are in place to move the city forward.

"We should all be proud of achievements and partnerships between the public, private and community sector.

"I will always look for opportunities to promote the city and region, and in particular your unique strength of local partnership working and the warmth of the local community."

The Mayor of Derry, Colum Eastwood, thanked Ms Watts for her commitment to the city.

"Over the past number of years, Valerie has shown leadership and determination in moving ahead with critical projects for the city and council.

"We've had a very positive year and the Chief Executive played an important part in this success.

"I wish her well in her future career in Scotland."
