NIE Energy changes name to Power NI

NIE Energy has changed its name to Power NI.

The company said that EU law and the sale of the company's former sister organisation, Northern Ireland Electricity, to another company led to the name change.

It will officially be known as Power NI from 25 July onwards. The name change ties in with the company's 80 year anniversary.

Power NI will issue letters to its customers to explain the situation.

Power NI's Managing Director, Stephen McCully, said: "In a previous incarnation we have been the Electricity Board, latterly as NIE Energy and now as Power NI.

"Although we are changing name, I would like to reassure customers that they will not notice any change to their services and the only difference will be a new logo on all of our correspondence," he added.

"Customer service will remain at the heart of our business and we will continue to look for new ways in which to help save our customers' energy and money.

In 2010 ESB, the main electricity company in the Republic, bought NIE for £1.2bn.

The Irish state-owned firm finalised the details of the takeover with NIE's parent company Viridian last December.
