Coldplay and Jessie J to appear at MTV awards in Belfast

Coldplay's Chris Martin: the band will appear at MTV's Europe Music Awards in Belfast

One of the world's biggest bands, Coldplay, are to headline MTV's Europe Music Awards in Belfast's Odyssey Arena next month.

Also gracing the stage will be Jessie J, who has racked up Number 1 hits in 18 markets worldwide in the past year.

Los Angeles based LMFAO, famous for the hit Party Rock Anthem will also make their debut at the European Music Awards.

The new names join the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the event on 6 November.

Jessie J said: "I can't quite believe I'm nominated for three awards. It is like a dream. I keep pinching myself. And being nominated for Best UK/Ireland act, alongside artists like Adele, Coldplay, Kasabian and Florence is an honour."

Redfoo from LMFAO said: "There are only two things that make a man like me happy - that first dunk in a hot fondue and being nominated and performing at the MTV EMA in Belfast."

The United States broadcaster has announced that two other locations in the city will be used at the same time as the Odyssey.

An announcement is expected on Thursday on which two venues will be chosen.

Belfast City Council and the NI Tourist Board have already contributed almost £900,000 towards the event which, the council said, could generate more than £10m for Northern Ireland.

Jessie J is nominated for three awards

Grammy award winner and controversial artist, Lady Gaga, is leading the nominations for the awards featuring in six categories.

Katie Perry, Adele and Justin Bieber are also tipped to do well, although their appearances at the awards have not yet been confirmed.

There is also speculation about which A-list artists could appear at one of the many music events being staged by Belfast City Council, through the Belfast Music Week project.

Belfast Music Week begins on 30 October. There will be 170 shows at more than 40 venues across the city with a finale on Saturday 5 November.

'MTV Live' at the Ulster Hall promises ''a night of exclusive live performances''.

Last year's Belfast Music Week generated more than £1.1m with more than 63,000 people attending and the organisers expect this year to be an even bigger attraction.

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Niall O'Donnghaile said: " This is a success story we want to build on and people are starting to discover what we have known for years - Belfast is the place to be for music."

The show will be broadcast live from the Odyssey arena on MTV on Sunday, 6 November.
