Police officers are continuing to deal with a security alert on the outskirts of Newry, close to the Irish border.

Officers received a report of a suspicious vehicle on the Fathom Line on Thursday evening.

SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley said police had told him that a vehicle had been abandonded with its engine running.

The Fathom Line has been closed at the junction with Drumalane Road and the border. Motorists are advised to avoid the area or use alternative routes.

The PSNI advised the public that, if they come across anything suspicious in the area, not to touch it but to report it to police immediately.

Mr Bradley said police were taking the alert very seriously and had advised local people to remain indoors while checks were carried out.

"Thay have said that the operation may take quite a length of time so the indications are that police may believe that there is a viable device in this vehicle", the MLA said.
