Rory McIlroy celebrates winning the USPGA Championship in August

US Open winner Rory McIlroy is one of the 12 finalists in the 2012 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

The event will be broadcast live from the ExCel arena in London on Sunday evening.

Other finalists for the accolade include tennis player Andy Murray and Olympian Jessica Ennis.

McIlroy is currently the world's number one golfer and recently won the US Open and featured in Europe's Ryder Cup comeback victory.

He is the only non-Olympian on the list,

This year has seen him become golf's youngest double major winner since Seve Ballesteros.

He has already won BBC Northern Ireland's Sports Personality of the Year.

The shortlist (in alphabetical order) is: Nicola Adams, Ben Ainslie, Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah, Katherine Grainger, Sir Chris Hoy, Rory McIIroy, Andy Murray, Ellie Simmonds, Sarah Storey, David Weir, Bradley Wiggins.

The BBC Sports Personality of The Year 2012 programme is on BBC One on Sunday, 16 December at 19:30 GMT.
