Traders in Enniskillen have been told that the town will be "open for business" during the G8 summit in June.

At a meeting with police on Monday, they were advised to expect significant congestion.

The road leading to the Lough Erne Resort will be closed for up to two weeks before and after the event.

The police aim to keep all other roads open.

Concerns were raised about large numbers of protesters coming to the town.

The police said it was impossible to predict how many there would be, however they do not believe it will be on the same scale as previous G8 summits and that the number intent on causing disorder will be small.

Meanwhile, funding of £233,000 is to be used to help revitalise Enniskillen town centre ahead of the G8 summit.

Social development minister Nelson McCausland made the announcement on Monday.

The funding will be used for a painting and signage scheme as well as retailer training.

The grant has been made to Fermanagh District Council.

They will appoint a creative management team to prepare a design guide and manage the delivery of the project.

Mr McCausland said the project would "ensure the reinvigoration of Enniskillen town centre".

"It will enable businesses and property owners within the town centre to make improvements which will create a brighter and more vibrant streetscape to attract shoppers and visitors," he said.

"In these difficult trading times it is essential that town centres appear as attractive and welcoming as possible.

"In June, the eyes of the world will be on Enniskillen and this project will strengthen the physical retail core of the town by improving its appearance.

"In addition, the training package for retailers will develop and enhance their marketing and promotion skills thus making Enniskillen town centre more appealing to customers and visitors."

The main venue for the G8 event in June is to be Lough Erne golf resort near Enniskillen.

The leaders of eight of the world's richest countries will attend the summit.
