Arrests in Northern Ireland and England over PSNI contracts

Six men have been arrested in Northern Ireland and England as part of an investigation into the awarding of a number of PSNI vehicle contracts.

Four men, including a police officer, were arrested in Northern Ireland in counties Antrim, Down and Tyrone.

Two men arrested in England are being brought to NI for questioning.

The six were arrested on suspicion of a range of offences including bribery, misconduct in public office and procuring misconduct in public office.

As well as the 48-year-old police officer, a 37-year-old member of police staff, a 54-year-old former police officer and a 62-year-old man were arrested in Northern Ireland.

The two men arrested in England are aged 34 and 54.

A number of searches at homes and business premises were also carried out and several items were seized. It is understood these include computers which detectives will now examine for any evidence of criminal behaviour.

In a statement, the PSNI said: "The police service expects its officers and staff to behave professionally, ethically and with the utmost integrity at all times.

"Any conduct which brings or is likely to bring discredit on the service will be investigated to establish whether or not a breach of the Code of Ethics has occurred. This may, as a result, lead to a criminal investigation."

A spokesperson for the Policing Board said it had been informed of an ongoing PSNI investigation into the awarding of a number of PSNI vehicle contracts.

"This is a matter of very serious concern and the board will be seeking an urgent update from the chief constable on the progress of the investigation," the spokesperson said.
