Andy Lawson: Rider killed during Ulster Grand Prix race named

Twenty-four-year-old Andy Lawson was a newcomer to the Dundrod circuit, as Rick Faragher reports

The rider who died during a race at the Ulster Grand Prix on Saturday was Andy Lawson.

The 24-year-old from Arbroath in Scotland, was taking part in the second Supersport race on the Dundrod circuit in County Antrim when he was killed.

An investigation into the incident is under way.

In a statement, the Dundrod and District Motorcycle Club said it was "incredibly saddened at the news".

Mr Lawson's family said they wanted the rest of the event to continue as planned

Noel Johnston, the clerk of the Ulster Grand Prix course, said: "My condolences are with his family, friends and race team.

Missed

"He was a lovely guy and an up-and-coming rider, definitely one to watch.

"I can't tell you how hard it is to continue the event in those circumstances, but Andy's family and race team were determined that the remainder of the event go ahead as planned.

"They believe it is what Andy would have wanted and we wanted to respect that."

The Dundrod District and Motorcycle Club said Mr Lawson would be "sadly missed by the entire road racing community".

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said Mr Lawson's loss "would be acutely felt".

"My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, and indeed with the wider road racing fraternity."
