Shannon McQuillan: Ombudsman notified over death

Shannon McQuillan died after being struck by a van on Saturday morning

The circumstances surrounding the death of a teenager in a crash near Toomebridge, County Antrim, have been passed to the Police Ombudsman.

Shannon McQuillan, 19, died after being struck by a van at about 03:40 GMT on Saturday.

The PSNI have said they have notified the ombudsman as is "normal, established protocol".

Police said Miss McQuillan, from the Dunloy area, died as a result of her injuries.

The incident happened on the Moneynick Road on Saturday

A 21-year-old man, whose name has not been officially revealed, was also hit by the vehicle on the Moneynick Road.

The man remains in a critical condition in hospital.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Our thoughts at this time are with the McQuillan family and all of those affected by this tragic incident."

They said it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.

Sinn Féin Councillor, Philip McGuigan said: "I don't want to engage in speculation but what I am aware of is that the PSNI have referred this incident to the Police Ombudsman.

"I am also aware that a number of PSNI officers were with Shannon and [the 21-year-old man] shortly before, and a short distance from where the accident happened, and I understand that the circumstances around that are the reasons for the referral to the Police Ombudsman."
