Hundreds gather in Dublin for Magdalene laundry survivors

Hundreds of people have gathered in Dublin to welcome home survivors of the Magdalene Laundries.

The laundries were Catholic-run workhouses where 10,000 women and girls were forced to do unpaid, manual labour between 1922 and 1996.

The 220 survivors included women who had emigrated to the UK, US and Australia: It was the first time they had gathered together in the Republic of Ireland.

A 2013 report found the Irish state was directly involved in their confinement.

President Michael D Higgins apologised to the women, saying they had been "failed by the state".
