A priest in the Archdiocese of Armagh has stood aside from his position due to concerns brought to the Diocese and reported to the Gardaí.

Fr Gerard McAleer is the parish priest of St Patrick's Church in Donaghmore, County Tyrone.

He has stood aside following concerns relating to a time prior to his ordination.

A statement from the Catholic Church was issued on Sunday afternoon.

The statement added that the relevant statutory authorities in Northern Ireland have been informed.

A native of Beragh, County Tyrone, Fr. McAleer served as a curate in Forkhill following his ordination in 1981, and he is a former principal of St Patrick's Boys Academy, Dungannon.

Fr McAleer is also well known to GAA followers throughout Tyrone as he was part of the county senior team management.

He was assistant manager when Tyrone won its first ever All-Ireland senior football title in 2003.
