The current estimate of the population in Northern Ireland is about 1.9 million

The first results from last year's Census in Northern Ireland will be published before the end of June.

Details about the population's religious make-up will be published in autumn, but no specific month has been earmarked.

In autumn, details will also be released about national identity, passports held, country of birth and sexual orientation.

The NI Statistics and Research Agency announced the timeline on Monday.

The official census day was Sunday 21 March 2021.

For the first time, people were urged to complete the survey online if they could, rather than on paper.

Eight out 10 people took the online option.

Census director Dr David Marshall thanked the public for their participation, saying: "We have had a fantastic response to the Census and I want to thank everyone who responded.

"It was great to see people playing their part in shaping public services and helping government departments, businesses, charities and other organisations understand the needs of our population."

A census occurs every 10 years and participation is compulsory.

The results of the 2011 census indicated that 45.1% of the population were Catholic or brought up Catholic, and 48.4% were from a Protestant or other Christian background.

A total of about 7% said they either belonged to another religion or none.

With 80% of people filling in their form online, the census contact centre processed more than 160,000 phone calls to help the public complete their returns.

The official census website, external outlines what happens with the information gathered.

"The information you give us helps decide how services are planned and funded in your local area," it said.

"This could mean things like doctors' surgeries, housing or new bus routes.

"It provides vital information about us, our society and future needs.

"We have had a great response to the 2021 Census from households across Northern Ireland, thank you to all who took part."
