A security alert that caused a number of homes to be evacuated in Finaghy, south Belfast has ended.

Police and Army personnel attended the train station at Finaghy Road North after the discovery of a suspicious object in the area.

It has since been removed for further examination after being made safe by the Army.

Residents have been able to return to their homes and Finaghy Road North has reopened.

The train line between Great Victoria Street in Belfast and Lisburn is also running again.

Earlier, a separate security alert near Londonderry ended with police saying "nothing untoward" had been found.

The incident on Tuesday morning followed the discovery of a suspicious object in Campsie, on the outskirts of the city.

The Clooney Road dual carriageway remained open throughout the alert, but an access road to a Covid-19 test centre was temporarily blocked.

Police attended the scene with ammunition technical officers (ATO).
