About 40 firefighters tackled a blaze in a building at Ulster University's Coleraine campus on Saturday.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said the fire on Cromore Road was reported at about 10:30 BST.

Ulster University (UU) said the biomedical sciences lab and storeroom had been affected.

It was extinguished on Saturday afternoon and is believed to have been accidental.

Fire commander Brian Coombes said: "The fire was isolated to a small room of the laboratory. Heavy smoke and heat contributed to breaking through the door and into the laboratory itself."

Six engines were at the blaze earlier in the day.

UU student Jordan Lewis lives on campus and woke up to the alarms going off at about 10:00 BST.

Mr Lewis, who is doing a masters in journalism, said it appeared to have been brought under control quickly.

"The outside wall is still in fairly decent condition, above the window you can see where it's been singed by the flames so I can only imagine what the inside looks like," he added.

UU said only a small number of students due to sit an exam in the building would be affected and the campus would operate as normal on Monday.
