A murder investigation has begun after the body of a 77-year-old woman was found at a house in Cookstown.

Police were called to the property in Ratheen Avenue shortly before 11:00 BST on Sunday where the woman's body was discovered.

A 45-year-old man, who was in the house, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Detectives have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Local councillor John McNamee said the family and wider community have been left devastated by the killing.

He told BBC News NI: "I was devastated personally because I knew the individual and I know the wider family circle.

"This thing doesn't happen in the likes of this estate, it has never happened before and I'm sure the people here will take a long time to recover from this."

Mid Ulster assembly member Patsy McGlone said there was a "terrible sense of shock, sadness and grief" in Cookstown.

"My thoughts and prayers are with her family and all those who knew her who will be devastated today," he added.
