Officers were called to reports of a suspicious object in the Antrim Road, Newtownabbey

A viable pipe bomb has been found during a security alert in Newtownabbey.

The controlled explosion was carried out on the device in the Antrim Road and it will be removed for further examination.

Police said they did not know how long the device had been there and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

The Antrim Road has now reopened.

Police said they were following "several lines of enquiry".
