Three men have been arrested after an attempted car hijacking sparked a security alert in Londonderry.

A gang of masked men armed with weapons tried to take a delivery driver's vehicle at Hollymount Park at about 21:35 GMT on Friday.

A suspicious object was found several hours after the incident close to a sports pitch.

The three masked men threatened the driver with knives and a gun and then ran towards Corrody Road.

SDLP assembly member Sinéad McLaughlin said the device was spotted by a passer-by.

"Thankfully children were not playing in the area at the time, but this is a very, very much used space by the local community," she added.

Police said they had conducted a number of searchers on houses in the area and several items had been seized.

Three men aged 54, 32 and 29 were arrested under Terrorism Act on Saturday.

Det Ch Insp Logue said: "The impact to the delivery driver and wider community is plain to see.

"We are appealing to anyone who was in the area and who noticed any suspicious activity to contact us on 101."
