A security alert in which residents were moved from their homes in east Belfast has ended and been declared an elaborate hoax.

The alert at Glenlea Park began shortly after 15:00 BST on Thursday after a suspicious object was found.

Army bomb disposal experts examined the object and later declared it an elaborate hoax. Residents have returned to their homes.

The object was taken from the scene and will be forensically examined.

"Members of the public affected by this incident are thanked for their patience and understanding as officers worked to ensure their safety," a police spokesperson said.

"An investigation is underway and anyone with any information which could assist with the investigation is asked to contact officers at Strandtown on 101."
