Derry Girls Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Jamie-Lee O'Donnell made a surprise appearance during a Fatboy Slim gig.

The world-famous DJ brought the two stars of the Channel 4 hit series on stage at the Unit 8 Warehouse concert in Londonderry on Saturday night.

They both danced alongside the DJ, whose real name is Norman Cook, and sounded rave horns during his set.

The reference of the two Derry Girls appearing on stage was not lost on fans of the multi award-winning show.

Fatboy Slim previously featured in the penultimate episode of the show's final season.

The episode centred around a fictional Fatboy Slim Halloween party concert, with the girls and "the wee English fella" desperate to get their hands on tickets.

Derry Girls has been a massive success for Channel 4, winning Royal Television Society Awards, Irish Film and Television Awards and BAFTAs.

The series was partly based on the show's creator Lisa McGee's schooldays at Thornhill College in Derry in the 1990s

Ms McGee also was awarded the freedom of the city and district in recognition for her work at a ceremony in the Guildhall last year.

The show has been a huge boost for tourism in the north west, with the Derry Girls mural and a museum exhibition based on the series attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world.

'Life imitates art'

Taking to social media after the real-life concert in Derry, which took place a week before Halloween, the DJ wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "Life imitates art as the Derry girls join me onstage".

Event organisers, Jika Jika, described it as "an iconic evening" and thanked the people of Derry for their support.

Fans of Derry Girls are hoping they do not have to wait too long for another comedy from the show's creator.

Channel 4 recently announced that they have commissioned a new eight-part TV series from Lisa McGee.

The comedy-thriller How To Get To Heaven From Belfast will follow three women who meet up at an old friend's wake.

Like Derry Girls, How To Get To Heaven From Belfast will be produced by Hat Trick Productions.

One of the UK's leading independent production companies, it has also been behind programmes like Father Ted, Fonejacker, Drop the Dead Donkey, Bodies and Have I Got News For You?
