Can smart mouthguards reduce rugby head injuries?

A rugby coach has said she is hopeful new smart mouthguards will be introduced at amateur level to help combat the effects of head injuries.

Katie-Anne McCallion, a rugby coach at Belfast Met, said players at every level are prone to concussions and head injuries and should be protected.

It comes as smart mouthguards - the latest innovation in smart sports technology - are set to be introduced at the elite level in rugby for the first time next year, thanks to the help of researchers from Ulster University.

They are fitted with micro-sensors that measure the force and acceleration in the head when there is a collision.
