A 56-year-old man wanted in the Republic of Ireland over suspected child sexual offences has been arrested in Belfast.

He was wanted on suspicion of attempted sexual communication with a child and attempting to meet a child for sexual exploitation.

He was detained on Monday under an Irish extradition warrant.

The man was then brought before Belfast's Extradition Court, where he was remanded in custody.

A spokesperson from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's international policing unit said it showed Northern Ireland was "not a safe haven for any wanted persons trying to avoid arrest".
