A doctor caught driving at 111mph in a 70mph-zone in County Londonderry has been fined £1,000.

Andrew Hanoman, 29, from Crown Place in Portsmouth, was detected doing more than 40mph over the speed limit on 23 June.

His lawyer described the speed he was doing between Claudy and Dungiven as "inexcusable".

He was also given eight penalty points when he appeared at Londonderry Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Deputy District Judge Liam McStay said that as a doctor, Hanoman would be "all too aware" of the outcome of excessive speed.

The judge described the fine as "very significant" and "well above the usual" for speeding cases.

Defence counsel Grainne McAnaney said the doctor worked in a hospital in Portsmouth but was coming from Donegal on other business.

The barrister said that on the day in question, Hanoman had driven more than 300 miles and had no previous record.
