A man has been treated in hospital for serious injuries after he was stabbed in the stomach in Downpatrick, County Down.

Police said it happened on a pathway in St Dympna's Avenue in the town at about 18:00 GMT on Saturday.

The victim, aged in his 20s, is in a serious but stable condition in hospital, police said.

They added the suspect, believed to be a man in his 30s, left the scene on foot towards Oriel Drive.

They said he was wearing an all grey tracksuit and carrying a white plastic bag.

SDLP Cllr Conor Galbraith said it was a "terrible incident and the local community are rightly shocked".

"This is not what should happen in a peaceful community on a Saturday night," he continued.

"I hope the injured party makes a full recovery and urge all involved to cooperate with the PSNI."
