Newry: Mark Murphy dies in Rathfriland Road crash

A man has died after a two-vehicle crash outside Newry on Thursday morning.

Mark Murphy, was 36 and from the Downpatrick area.

The crash happened on the Rathfriland Road shortly after 09:00 GMT and involved a bus and a lorry. Mr Murphy was driving the lorry.

The woman driving the bus was taken to hospital for treatment for injuries which at this time are not believed to be life threatening.

The Rathfriland Road remains closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek an alternative route.

Police, paramedics, the air ambulance and a hazardous area response team were deployed to the scene.

Two patients were taken to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital and a third was taken to Craigavon Area Hospital.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it despatched three emergency crews, a doctor and a rapid response paramedic to the incident, along with its hazardous area response team.
