The personal brand consultant Billy Dixon has withdrawn from an International Women's Day event in Newry following an online backlash.

The organisers, Newry Mourne and Down District Council, faced criticism for announcing a man as the keynote speaker for that event.

Mr Dixon said he was saddened to see the "unfortunate backlash the event organisers are facing".

The council said it "acknowledges the concerns raised by the public".

In a statement to BBC News NI, Newry Mourne and Down District Council said it "understands the withdrawal of Mr Dixon from our International Women's Day event".

"Our commitment to inclusivity remains unwavering and we deeply regret the impact on the celebration of the day," the statement continued.

"We remain dedicated to fostering an environment that celebrates the contributions of individuals from all walks of life."

"It saddens me to withdraw my involvement," Mr Dixon said in a statement on Monday.

He added that participating in the event in previous years "has been a source of inspiration and empowerment as we strive for gender equality and amplify women's voices".

Several assembly members were among those who criticised the decision to book a man as keynote speaker for an International Women's day event.

Naomi Long, the leader of the Alliance Party, said the announcement was "mortifying" while Sinead McLaughlin of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) described it as "very 1990s".

The council previously defended its decision, stating that the invitation "aligns with our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment".

'Surprised and shocked'

Mr Dixon told BBC News NI's Talkback programme on Friday that he was "surprised and shocked" by the controversy.

He suggested that most of the backlash was due to the fact that he was listed as "keynote speaker" for the event.

"If I had been listed as a speaker I don't think it would have had the same reaction," he said.
