The police are investigating reports of shots being fired in Londonderry after a man was seen in the city carrying a black handgun.

The man was seen at about 22:10 GMT on Friday in Gartan Square.

A short time later, two loud bangs, believed to be gunshots, were heard. There have been no reports of any injuries at this time.

The PSNI said they believe the gun was fired by the suspect, who is thought to be between his late 30s and early 40s.

He was wearing a black-hooded jumper, police said.

Police have asked that anyone who was in the area on Friday between 21:45 and 22:10 who noticed or heard anything suspicious to get in touch with them.

"We are especially keen to hear from anyone who may have CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage of the area during this time," a spokesperson said.
