Police have urged the public to be vigilant after a "significant" quantity of suspected opiates were found on a County Down beach.

Officers removed tablets believed to be Tramadol - a severe painkiller, external - from Cloughey beach on Wednesday afternoon.

The tablets, which have been sent for further examination, were found in plastic blister packs.

A police spokesperson said officers had scanned the wider area but appealed for the public to be cautious.

"This is a popular beach with families, children and dog walkers," they said.

"Please be aware of the severe dangers of taking any drugs, or counterfeit medication, which have not been prescribed by your doctor.

"And please be especially careful when it comes to your children who may be walking or playing on the beach."
