Twelve police officers have been assaulted while arresting one man in Lurgan, County Armagh.

During an arrest for common assault on Saturday, the police said a man began kicking, spitting, punching and attempting to headbutt officers.

Assaults on officers also continued on arrival at the police station.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the incident was the latest in a series of "shameful attacks" on officers in the area at the weekend.

A total of 18 officers were injured in three separate incidents, Ch Insp Brendan Green has said.

The senior officer condemned the attacks on police, describing them as "shameful and unacceptable".

"Our officers and staff are working hard to keep their communities safe and do not deserve this treatment," he said.

"Assaults on our officers are unacceptable, and will not be tolerated."
