Thousands say goodbye to Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Thousands of people gathered along the banks of the River Foyle in Londonderry on Sunday to bid farewell to the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

Derry was the penultimate stopover for the 12 international teams taking part in the world's longest ocean race.

The Red Arrows flew over Lough Foyle to close the city's nine day maritime festival.

Derry's nine-day LegenDerry Maritime Festival came to a close on Sunday as the 12 yachts left the city for Den Helder in the Netherlands.

About 270 crew members cast off from the Foyle marina, sailing towards Greencastle where the next stage of the race started.

Vantage points for the Red Arrows display were at Greencastle in County Donegal, Magilligan Point and Benone Beach.

The air show flew over Lough Foyle at 14:45 BST on Sunday after the yachts arrived in Greencastle.

The Red Arrows display caused traffic disruption in Greencastle and in Magilligan.

People also enjoyed the Red Arrows in Coleraine and Portstewart.

The Red Arrows made the announcement about closing the LegenDerry Maritime Festival earlier in the year but said they would not be flying over Derry city because of safety concerns.

Thousands lined the coast in Greencastle to wave goodbye to the 12 yachts, including the Derry-Londonderry-Doire clipper.

The 2,800 mile leg from New York to Derry was the 14th stage in the 16 series sailing competition.

The home victory put the Derry-Londonderry-Doire crew in fourth place and in contention to challenge for the third spot on the podium.

Limavady Borough Council said in June that, due to erosion, it had to make the Magilligan coast more safe before public arrived to see the Clipper Around the World Race.

People cheered and waved flags as the crews arrived in Greencastle.

The Derry-Londonderry-Doire crew said they were "sad to leave such a welcoming city".

Mayor Brenda Stevenson welcomed the 12 yachts to the city and said it was an "emotional moment" when they left.

The yachts paraded the River Foyle before it left to go under the Foyle bridge towards Donegal.

Thousands of people lined the quay on Saturday evening to watch events in the water including fireworks. The pyrotechnics display included a fiery battle between two pirate ships, in tribute to the Clipper race competitors.

The Derry-Londonderry-Doire crew were welcomed on stage at the Beach Boys concert in Ebrington Square.

The crew members enjoyed a night of entertainment by The Beach Boys before leaving Derry. They are expected to arrive in Holland between 2 and 4 of July.
