Kicking off

Pity Treasury Minister Mark Hoban and his Labour shadow Chris Leslie, who will be spending a theoretical 90 minutes tonight debating a European Commission document on Financial Services: Market Abuse, while pretty much everyone else in Westminster is watching the England-Ukraine game.

I would imagine that the indefatigable Bill Cash - who chairs the European Scrutiny Select Committee, which refers these things to the Commons - will be present. But apart from the chair and a couple of duty whips, I wonder if anyone else will be?

I gather the whips are rather desperately texting MPs, in the hope of finding a few who're willing to tear themselves from the telly and pad out the debate…without much success, so far.

If they can't lure a few more MPs into the chamber, Andrew Turner, the Isle of Wight MP, had better be on standby for an early start to his adjournment debate on Access to Water in Chillerton and Gatcombe. That theoretical 90 minutes allocated for the debate might turn out to be nearer 25...
