PM answers Abu Dhabi student's question about human rights

David Cameron has told university students in Abu Dhabi that it was important to stand up for human rights.

The Prime Minister is visiting the Gulf on a trip to strengthen the UK's defence, security and commercial ties.

During a question and answer session a female student asked Mr Cameron to comment on why Britain was putting pressure on the United Arab Emirates regarding human rights, and in particular, women's rights.

Mr Cameron said Britain's history of supporting human rights around the world did not mean preaching or lecturing.

He said, "Different countries take different pathways to becoming more open societies" but he added that standing up for human rights was important and nothing was "off limits" in the countries' discussions.
