Coastguard aids care workers in snow

  • Published

Coastguard teams were called out to help care workers reach elderly people on the Isle of Lewis after four inches of snow fell on Friday.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) asked Stornoway Coastguard for the use of its 4x4 vehicles at about 1715 GMT.

Stornoway watch manager Martin Collins said: "We are happy to assist if called upon in such situations."

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings across Scotland.

Heavy snow and widespread icy roads are forecast for many areas.

Northern Constabulary said all trunk routes into the Highlands and Islands were open and in a reasonable condition, although there is a significant risk of black ice on untreated roads.

Road conditions in the north of Shetland are reported as hazardous.
