Cancer units to benefit from £22m of new equipment

It is hoped the new cancer treatment systems will benefit patients across Scotland

Five hospitals across Scotland are to receive new equipment, worth £22m, to treat cancer.

The Scottish government awarded the contract for replacing radiotherapy machines to Varian Medical Systems.

It is hoped the more technically-advanced equipment will treat tumours in a faster and more precise manner.

The Beatson clinic in Glasgow, Western General in Edinburgh, Ninewells in Dundee, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and Inverness's Raigmore will benefit.

The contract was awarded following an open procurement exercise.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "The award of this contract will ensure cancer centres in Scotland have the best possible radiotherapy equipment, providing patients with quality treatment.

"Rather than purchase the new equipment on a hospital by hospital basis, this contract has been negotiated on a national basis, resulting in cash savings which we can re-invest in Scotland's health service."
