Edinburgh Castle has recorded its highest ever monthly visitor figures after 205,000 people went through its doors in August.

The biggest influx came on 8 August, when 8,232 people visited the historic attraction.

The castle has also been shortlisted in the best UK heritage attraction category in the British Travel Awards.

Scotland's culture secretary said the "global icon" continued to attract people from all over the world.

Fiona Hyslop said: "The increase in visitor numbers is really encouraging and highlights the important role Scotland's history and heritage plays in Scotland's economy.

"No city in the world can compare with Edinburgh in August with the added attractions of the festival, fringe and fireworks.

"However, Edinburgh is a city with so much to offer in terms of cultural activity that it is an ideal year-round destination."
