Scottish council election: Council control talks get under way

Politicians in Scotland have begun negotiations to form coalitions in most of the country's local authorities.

The Scottish National Party were the outright winners in Angus and Dundee and Scottish Labour will run Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire. But the nature of the voting system in Scotland has left 23 councils with no party in overall control.

Although the SNP controls fewer councils than Labour, the First Minister and leader of the nationalists, Alex Salmond, says that his party has done remarkably well.
