Heavy rain in much of southern and central Scotland caused serious travel problems on Wednesday evening.

Flooding halted most rail services from Glasgow's Queen Street Station for several hours and some services continue to be disrupted.

Localised flooding hit parts of both Edinburgh and Glasgow.

In Edinburgh, a woman, her friend and four-year-old son had to be rescued by firefighters when their car became trapped in flood waters in Ratho.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said it took about 120 calls from householders and business owners concerned about flooding.

Water damage to signals on Wednesday also disrupted trains on the low level line through Glasgow Central, and at Edinburgh Haymarket, but most problems have now cleared.

The M8 had been affected by standing water, with the worst of the problems near the outskirts of Edinburgh.

On Thursday morning, the Edinburgh bypass, Forth Road Bridge and parts of the M8 were also being affected by fog.
