Scotland weather: Ice and snow warning for roads

Snow and ice have caused treacherous driving conditions in the north east of Scotland, with some schools closed.

Heavy snow was affecting the Laurencekirk to Stonehaven stretch of the A90 and the Keith to Huntly stretch of the A96.

The conditions were difficult for motorists during the morning

More than 10 schools in Aberdeenshire were closed, as were some in Shetland.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning, valid until 12:00 on Wednesday, of icy conditions covering much of the country.

Dozens more schools in Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen were said to have been affected by disruption to pupil transport.

The road was closed in both directions at Toll of Birness, north of Ellon in Aberdeenshire, for a short time after an HGV got stuck in snow. It was cleared by 07:00, and traffic was said to be moving again.

Journeys to work in Aberdeen took far longer than usual.

Police in Elgin said driving conditions were hazardous around Borough Briggs Road, with several lorries having got stuck on a hill overnight.

Aberdeen Airport was open but the weather was causing some flights to be delayed.

People in the north east of Scotland awoke to snow-covered cars

In Angus, two schools - Lethnot Primary and Tarfside Primary - have been closed due to snow.

Office said that, as rain and sleet cleared southwards on Wednesday, surfaces would be left wet and prone to icing under clearing skies.

In Dumfries and Galloway, police said they had dealt with 39 separate road traffic collisions in the space of 24 hours.

They expected driving conditions to remain difficult due to ice throughout the day on Wednesday.

Further icy conditions have been forecast for much of Scotland for the rest of the week, with further snow possible in many areas on Thursday.
