Three people have died in a two-vehicle crash in the Highlands.

Emergency services were called to the A9 at Kingussie at about 18:00 on Tuesday.

Police Scotland said three people had suffered fatal injuries. A further three casualties were taken to Raigmore hospital in Inverness for treatment.

It is understood a Jeep Cherokee and an Audi car were involved in the collision. At least one of the casualties was airlifted to hospital.

Police said the three injured people were badly hurt and were in a stable condition in hospital.

A third vehicle was said to have sustained minor damage in what was believed to be an incidental collision after the main crash.

It was understood that two of the vehicles were British-registered and the third had a German registration plate.

The A9 was closed for several hours following the crash.

The diversion route was blocked for a short time after a lorry broke down.

The A9 re-opened at about 23:20.
