Inverkip Power Station in Inverclyde is to be demolished on 28 July 2013

The site started to be dismantled in 2010

Housing is to be built on the land after it has been cleared

Construction of the oil-fired power station had begun in 1970

It was rarely used due to the oil crisis of 1973

The crisis meant that by the time construction was completed generation was uneconomical

The site was then mothballed and used only as a strategic reserve

It was used during the miners' strike of the 1980s

The power station remained in a state of preservation for almost 40 years

The interior now has the appearance of a time capsule from the 1970s

The 230m chimney is Scotland's tallest free-standing structure and is due to be demolished later this month
