The aurora borealis lit up Scotland in spectacular style on Wednesday night. Benjy Boyle took this shot of Ben Lomond from Alexandria.

"I've always wanted to capture a shot of the aurora, today was my lucky day," says Stuart Byrnes, who was on holiday in Aviemore.

This was the view of the sky from Invergordon looking north west towards the Ardross Hills, captured by Andrew Bannerman.

The amazing light show could also be seen over Cupar - this picture taken by Chris Webb.

Andy Donne captured this great shot of The Plough, sitting over an arc of fluorescent light, over Stepps.

Back to the northern Northern Lights - and Andrew Smith caught the display as seen from Clachnaharry in Inverness.

The view from Blackness Castle this time. Gareth Paxton says it was nearly on par with when he saw it as "a wee boy during the great solar storm of 1989".

This was the aurora over Boat of Garten - sent in by Tina Jack.

The Plough makes another appearance, but this time over St Kilda. Gina Prior said taking this shot from The Gap on Hirta required some care due to the sheer cliff very nearby.

Derek Souter sent in this picture of the lights dancing in the skies around Aberfoyle.

There was more than a little purple to the shade of the sky over Dunure in Ayrshire, as shown in this image from Robin Scott.

And Jane MacLennan caught a tiny tinge of purple in this amazing shot taken above Gairloch in Wester Ross. Oh yes, and there's The Plough shining clearly again.

Henry Memmott says this was his first experience of the Northern Lights and it was "amazing". Seen here from Dungavel Wind Farm, near Strathaven.

Ewan Kane, from East Kilbride, took this photo overlooking Inchtavannach at Luss.

Ian Reid took this stunning image from Kirkmaiden in Dumfries and Galloway.

This intersting shot was taken by Les Ellingham at the Land Raiders monument at Aignish on the Isle of Lewis.

Claire Allison, who was watching three miles south of Ayr, said it was "just stunning watching them dance around the sky".

This shot was taken from Irvine beach by William Harding.
