Scots recognised in Queen's birthday honours list

The honours list is published to mark the Queen's official birthday

Scottish residents from all walks of life have been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

They include charity volunteers, a highland dancer and a chip shop owner.

Their contribution to their communities and wider Scottish society is marked by the award of the British Empire Medal (BEM) or the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

People from the Highlands, the Western Isles and the Northern Isles are particularly strongly represented.

Valerie Johnson of Frankie's Fish and Chips at Brae in Shetland is to receive the BEM.

She is being recognised for services to the food and drink industry in Shetland.

Her business employs seven full-time and 15 part-time staff. It is said to be "not only Britain's most northerly chippie, it's also the best".

Volunteers from charitable and community groups on the list include Malcolm Livingstone from Whitecraigs in Glasgow.

Mr Livingstone is chairman of the Glasgow Jewish Community Trust and becomes an MBE for services to the Jewish community in Glasgow.

Alison Brown, from Tranent, co-founder of the charity Beach Wheelchairs, is awarded the BEM for services to people with disabilities.

Her charity, based in North Berwick, provides wheelchairs which allow disabled people to venture onto sand and into water.

Margaret Reston from the Borders village of Reston becomes an MBE for services to the Riding for the Disabled Association.

She has worked for them for over 40 years in a variety of roles.

Lorraine Mckenzie of East Dunbartonshire Women's Aid is awarded the MBE.

In the 30 years she has been involved with the group, 25,000 women have been given advice or support and 690 women and their children have been helped to find refuge accommodation.

The co-founders of craft beer company BrewDog, who have been awarded MBEs, said they were "incredible" recognition of how much they had achieved in nine years.

James Watt and Martin Dickie set up the brewing firm in 2007 when they were 24 in response to the "stuffy ales" which dominated the UK drinks market.

Aberdeenshire-based BrewDog has grown from two employees to 580 and opened about 30 bars across the UK and 15 more around the world including Helsinki, Tokyo, Rome and Sao Paulo.

Dance teacher Cecilia Mccafferty from Lanark also becomes an MBE for services to Highland dancing and charity.

For over 42 years she has run a dance school teaching Highland, ballet, tap, modern and jazz.

Dance shows she helped organise have raised over £100,000 for local charities.

Island GP Dr Andrew Naylor is awarded the MBE for services to healthcare on the Isle of Harris.

He is said to be "renowned for his willingness to turn up whatever the time of night or weather".

Journalist Melanie Reid is to become an MBE for services to journalism and people with disabilities.

She has worked for the Scotsman, the Sunday Mail, the Express and the Herald and the Times.

A riding accident in 2010 left her seriously injured. Her weekly articles describing her determination to recover have been published in the Times Saturday magazine.

They are said to have become an inspiration to thousands of readers.

BEM: Mrs Margaret Ann Mcauley, Glasgow. For voluntary service to young people in Glasgow.
