Scotland's papers: 'Gamble backfires'

The election features on the front pages of Scotland's papers with editions being updated and headlines and pictures changing through the night to reflect the latest results.

The Daily Record was first to update its front page. The first and second versions had the same headline: "May hung out to cry" . But the later one features a more sombre picture of Theresa May.

The first edition of the Daily Telegraph in Scotland, published at about 22:22, said "Shock for May as exit polls point to hung parliament". An updated front page leads with "May's gamble backfires".

The headline on the 04:00 edition of The National is simply: "Thank You". It features pictures of SNP MPs who have lost their seats.

"May's fight to stay in power" was the headline on the first edition of the Scottish Daily Express. It later became "Fright night" on the paper's 04:00 election special edition.

The 22:00 version of the Scottish Daily Mail front page said Britain is "on a knife edge" and heading for a hung parliament after a "shock Labour surge". An update after 01:00 talked of a "surprise Labour surge". Its final 05:00 election special headline reads: "The night of humiliation" and features pictures of Theresa May and Nicola Sturgeon.

The Times in Scotland says "May's big gamble fails". The paper also says it's a "setback" for Nicola Sturgeon as the SNP are set to be ousted in a number of key seats.

The Scottish Sun's headline is "May hung out to dry". The paper says the SNP are set to lose 22 seats and the Conservatives will lose their majority. A later edition says Ruth Davidson and Kezie Dugdale are seeing a "surge" in votes.

"Exit poll shock" shows Tories losing majority, was the Herald's early headline. At 05:30 it was updated and now says: "May humiliated but Scots wins keep Tories in power".

The Scotsman's first front page said Mrs May's future is "on the line". The paper's later 04:00 edition says "Salmond defeated" and suggests Mrs May could be "forced out" as her election gamble backfires.

The first Press and Journal edition of the night looks ahead to a night of "surprise results". The paper says the polls suggest trouble for Theresa May as "election gamble backfires".

The Courier's headline on its first edition was "May sees ballot box gamble fail". The paper's 06:00 updated front page has the headline "Mayday" and says the PM's power gamble has failed.

"Hung, drawn and not sorted" is the headline on the 06:00 edition on the Edinburgh Evening News.
