The Queen has officially opened the sixth session of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood.

Because of social distancing restrictions, the ceremony went ahead in the debating chamber with empty seats and pre-recorded music.

The crown appears in the chamber as part of the opening proceedings, and is taken to Holyrood as part of the "Riding of Parliament", a ritual dating back to the 15th Century and reintroduced in 1999.

The Queen congratulated the Scottish parliament for being able to mark the new session safely in a "very trying period" and told MSPs they had a key role to "help create a better, healthier future for us all and engage with the people they represent, especially our young people".
